Lullaby

The symbol im choosing is Jimmie’s blanket. I noticed that a lot of the time in this story, Silko had his blanket wrapped around her wherever she went. I saw the blanket as a sign of comfort and security. She mentioned the loss of her son to the war and did not see it as a somber thing to keep but also said that “it wasn’t like Jimmie died, he just never came back,” which I think is also tied in with this blanket. It also comforts her when she thinks about her other children that were taken away under pretenses that she couldnt understand. I felt that that was definitely villainous of the white men, knowing that she couldnt understand what they meant. She sits and thinks a lot of the time or will walk to find her husband while wearing the blanket as a shawl in a lot of the moments in this story. The blanket is very worn from the constant use as Silko describes it as “a faded green and unraveling on the ends.” cant think of anything… cant think of anything… not helping me think of anything… The blanket holds a lot of heartfelt meaning and love as I can see it in the way it is always with her. cant think of anything… cant think of anything… need words to come to mind… cant think of anything… cant think of anything… i keep spelling cant like cnat because dumb fingers… In her times of need she refers to the blanket as being warmer than it has ever been and I think that speaks volumes to how much this blanket keeps her together. It is her peacemaker, her safety, her closest confidant at times since it is only her and her husband. Albeit, he is rarely there, if not out getting drunk, yet she still goes to look for him each night to be there with him. Silko says something along the lines of how “she doesnt understand why they were together for so long when they feel like strangers” and it is strange how after all that time they never really had much of it together. He was always working.
