I do not believe there is a protagonist in the story. The author may have made this decision to show that not one side is right or wrong. No one is the antagonist here, they are just a couple trying to work through and bury their issues. I noticed when I read the story that it was told from Shukumar’s pov mostly. There were plenty of details about Shoba but you could never understand what was going through her mind or hear her thoughts on Shukumar like he spoke of her. It was mainly 3rd person limited. This fact made me sit back and think of why just one side was being told and I think it is refreshing to hear just from the males side. Shoba may have had her own reasons for doing the things she did but Shukumar was the focus. Thinking of what to type next bc my brain is shooting off in many directions i could go with this… cant think of anything, cant think of anything, cant spell cant properly either apparently because im still typing cnat, cnat think of anything.. see? I also think the author chose to not make anyone the protagonist bc this is a marriage and when things fall apart, sometimes there is no right or wrong, or side to choose from that was a lesser evil so to speak. The couple simply drifted apart after the loss of their still born child. The thing that astonished me was the way Shukumar took the opportunity of Shoba saying she was moving out as his chance to hurt her as he had been by telling her the one thing she couldnt bear. This could have been his last plee for them to finally show each other some form of emotion they had been lacking for a while. If we had picked Shukumar as a protagonist, we would have to choose who was right and wrong in the things they did and said in the text over the other. The emotion of the story wasnt something that necessarily needed a protagonist. cant think of anything, cant think of anything, cant think of anything, cant think of anything, I think I have typed out all the thoughts i could muster on this topic, cnat think of anything, cant think of anything, please say we should stop typing now, cnat think of anything, cnat think of anything, cant think of anything, cnat think of anything, cant think of anything but the way i keep messing up the word cant now, cant think of…
